Why a Web Quest?
A web quest is designed to help children complete tasks independently using online resources. When children can navigate the Internet on their own to complete the assigned tasks they feel a sense of accomplishment. The web quest also helps to enhance learning by offering interesting and educational sites that are age-appropriate. A web quest utilizes websites, videos, and database searching to allow learning opportunities in different formats. This can attract some children who need more visuals than "regular" book reading sometimes allows.
Who can complete this Web Quest?
This web quest is designed for children in the 3rd-6th grades. It is an extra part of the Summer Reading Program activities for this age group. If you have a child that is slightly younger than the intended group and you think your child would enjoy the web quest we invite you to look through the materials and sites provided to determine if your child can complete the tasks. You know your child's abilities and we welcome any children who want to to attempt the web quest. Remember though that part of the purpose of the web quest is to let children successfully complete the tasks as independently as they can. It is never our intent to make children feel as if they have failed. If you think your child may be too young for the web quest, but you want them to have some extra activities please let us know. We have many additional activities that we can provide for kids of all ages!
What part can I play in the Web Quest?
As stated previously the web quest is meant to be completed independently by the child, however there are activities that your child may ask you to help them complete. You can also encourage your child and help motivate them to do one task per week. Supporting their learning by bringing them to the library to get their Web Quest Passport stamped, providing opportunities for your child to have uninterrupted time online, or just by watching to see what sections your child gets most interested in and providing extra materials or actiities on that topic are all GREAT ways to be a part of the web quest experience! Another great way to enhance the web quest is to visit the sites on your own so you can talk with your child about what he/she is learning.
